Highgate Lodge
Thursday, August 11th

Highgate Lodge is a private seniors residence which offers in-house activities, games room and some transportation. Some of the residents were new to the building and still finding out what is available. Others had lived in the facility for a few years.
What kind of activities do you participate in at Highgate?
-Exercise classes
-Games room downstairs but it is not very nice and dark so not well used (will be upgraded in near future).
-Movie night once or twice. Not too many daytrips offered.
-Library available but it is limited – would like to go to public library but hard to get to
What kinds of activities would interest you?
Chair Tai Chi
Exercise classes that are later than 9:00am
Singing group
Theatre
Creative Writing
Speakers or discussion groups on current events
-Monterey Centre offered chair dancing, and with walkers, and was very enjoyable. It would be nice to have it at Highgate in the afternoon.
Transportation:
Transportation was the overwhelming barrier to participating out in community programs.
- The building is set on a hill so residents could get down to Shelbourne but coming back
was an issue – steep hill
- Most have given up driving which creates a barrier to getting to and from centres, big
adjustment
- Some had attended workshops at Yakimovich Wellness Centre however transportation is
a problem. They offer great programs for free
-Taking the bus can be a hassle
-Might be nice to have a program in the complex which would introduce recreation centres
to residents (similar to Steps To Connect)
- Need a crosswalk with flashing light – manual button - to get across the street outside
- No accessible park in the area that is easy to get to, with trails,/pathways that
accommodate walkers, steep hill
- Would like to come to Cedar Hill Rec Centre to try out the pottery studio.
- Daughter accompanied resident to the pool so she could help with changing and
accessing the facility. Although she would only want her daughter, a leisure assistant
may be useful for others who need help
